I must confess to you:
The Titanium Belt Buckle I'm about to show you is something I initially created just for myself.
The particular design is something I've had in my head for many years - but just never took the time to fully finalize the design and bring it to life!
Precision CNC machined from a SOLID BILLET of GRADE 5 TITANIUM I call this design the TiBuckle™:
One-Piece Design
Not only does the TiBuckle™ start as a solid billet of Grade 5 Titanium weighing in at a hefty 252g (9 oz.) ...we machine it away to leave just 39g (1.4 oz.) of titanium as the buckle itself.
That's 85% of the titanium material machined away! Yes, it may seem like a waste, but it really is the only way to make this a one-piece design.
Visual Machining Lines
The TiBuckle™ is different to almost any product I have designed and made in the past because of the cnc machining lines I have purposefully left in.
I've always wanted to experiment with leaving lines in a design - and this buckle seemed like the perfect opportunity to do this!
There are two different ways in which I've done this.
#1 - Subtle machining lines on the front of the TiBuckle™. Here's what the front of the buckle looks like close-up:
#1 - Aggressive machining lines on the rear of the TiBuckle™.
I'll be honest here...
I was a bit apprehensive of leaving lines in a titanium part as I had never done it before (I usually aim to make everything smooth). It seems to have worked out really well and I'm really happy with the end result.
Not only that, but these lines are "hidden" from anyone else who sees the TiBuckle™ when you're wearing it. I liked the idea of taking the time to machine and contour lines in there and then hiding them from the rest of the world (so only you know they are there!).
Secure "Locking Pin"
If you already know anything about me, then you know I'm 100% for the function of something first ...only after that do I focus on the aesthetics of how it looks.
The function of the TiBuckle™ is absolutely critical. You need to have confidence that your leather belt is going to be held securely.
Take a look at this:
Hopefully you can see in the above photo the specific design elements that I've put into the "Locking Pin" on the TiBuckle™.
There are no screws or such - the locking pin is machined from the same initial billet of titanium.
We have given it a sort of "mushroom" design where the head of locking pin helps hold the buckle in the hole on the belt.
Slim And Minimalist
Here is what was an absolute non-negotiable for me:
The TiBuckle™ HAD to be slim. If I could not make it slim, then it was an absolute deal-breaker for me and I was not going to make it.
Now here's the truth...
If you were to ask me what my favorite thing about the TiBuckle™ is, then I would have to tell you it is the slim profile of it.
Not only was I blown-away with how slim it was the first time I put it on ...but EVERY time I wear it (and I wear it every day) I appreciate how slim and minimal it is. Yeah, I know, this probably sounds a bit over-the-top ...but it's honestly true.
The photo below shows how we've "pocketed out" the rear of the buckle so the belt slides in it. This helps the buckle sit closer to your waist and not stick out like most other buckles. It's a little detail that really makes a huge difference when you're wearing the buckle.
Lightweight
I mentioned earlier how much of the titanium we machine away to product the TiBuckle™.
The weight of the TiBuckle™ is just 39 grams (1.4 oz) and so you really notice it compared to most other buckles.
Matte Surface Finish
Once the TiBuckle™ comes off the CNC Machine we then do some hand-finishing to it before finally tumbling it.
The first part of the tumbling stage is where any sharp edges or corners are rounded.
The second part of the tumbling stage is where our famous Matte surface finish is done. The final finish is a nice, smooth silver/grey color:
Dimensions
The length of the front face is exactly 80mm (3.2").
The height of the front face is exactly 50mm (2.0").
The ideal width of a leather belt for the TiBuckle™ is 36mm - but it is designed to fit up to a standard 38mm (1.5") belt comfortably.
The ideal belt thickness is around 2mm (0.08") to 3mm (0.12"). Personally I prefer a thicker belt at around 3mm (the TiBuckle™ effortlessly works with this thickness of belt).
Custom-Made Belt (Optional)
Once I had made the TiBuckle™ I wanted to have my ideal belt for it (yeah, totally self-absorbed I know).
Personally, I'm not a great fan of thin belts ...I like them to be fairly thick and solid.
So here's what I did:
I had my friend Steph over at Kohi Point Leather make a custom leather belt for me to my exact size.
The belt she made is the one you have seen in the photos above. It's black vegetable-tanned leather (so no chemicals used in the process like chromium-tanned leather).
It is around 3mm (0.12") thick - although this varies slightly over the surface of the entire hide.
Note: You'll notice in the image below there is a faint "line" vertically up the middle of the TiBuckle™ - that's part of how the machining is done. It can only be seen in certain lights (particularly when looking front-on).
The reason I'm telling you about this belt is because I've persuaded Steph to make a few more belts.
In one of the Order Boxes down below you're going to be able to add a custom-made belt to your TiBuckle™ order. You will be able to select your size and Steph will make it specifically for you (Steph does not have a lot of belt leather and so it's not possible to make them and hold them in stock - that's why they have to be made specifically for you when you order).
